CatIQ Discloses Third Loss Estimate for June/July Severe Storm Event in Ontario and Quebec, Updated Loss for Bald Range Fire

CatIQ - Catastrophe Indices and Quantification. A PERILS Company.

Toronto, October 6, 2026 – CatIQ, the independent Toronto-based organization providing industry-wide catastrophe insurance data and subsidiary of PERILS, has today disclosed its third industry loss estimate for the severe thunderstorm event that affected parts of southern Ontario and southern Quebec between June 30 and July 3, 2026.

The third estimate for the event, which provides a snapshot of the insurance market 90 days post-event, is CAD 491 million. This marks an increase versus the 45-day estimate of CAD 439 million, with the majority of the growth occurring in the residential line of business. The loss number covers property (both commercial and residential) and vehicle (motor) claims including additional loss adjustment expenses. More detailed meteorological information as well as loss data at the FSA (high-res CRESTA) level for the event are available via the CatIQ and PERILS subscriber platforms.

Caroline Floyd, Director of CatIQ, commented, “The city of Ottawa saw its wettest summer on record in 2026, and this event was a primary contributor. Of the nearly 550 mm of rain that fell on the city between June and August, nearly 120 mm fell on July 1. The impact of this intense pluvial flooding is clearly reflected in the high-resolution loss data, which shows more than 45% of the incurred loss in personal lines stemmed from just two FSAs in the Nepean area. All told, more than 70% of the incurred total and more than 60% of claims for personal property arose from Nepean and communities on the southwest side of Ottawa.”

CatIQ also provided an update on the Bald Range Fire that impacted Summerland, British Columbia, and the surrounding area in August 2026. The second estimate, reflecting a snapshot of the insurance market 45 days
post-event, is CAD 293 million. This marks a slight decrease versus the initial estimate of CAD 313 million and falls below the PERILS reporting threshold.

The next update for next Ontario and Quebec storm estimate will be released on January 5, 2027, following the PERILS reporting schedule.
