CAD 671M – CatIQ Discloses 45-day Loss Estimate for Southern Ontario Severe Storm Outbreak of September 2026

CatIQ - Catastrophe Indices and Quantification. A PERILS Company.

Toronto, October 20, 2026 – CatIQ, the independent Toronto-based organisation providing industry-wide catastrophe insurance data and subsidiary of PERILS, has today disclosed its second industry loss estimate for the severe storm outbreak that affected southern Ontario, including Toronto, on September 2 and 3, 2026.

The second estimate for the event, which provides a snapshot of the insurance market 45 days post-event, is CAD 671 million. The loss number covers property (both commercial and residential) and vehicle (motor) claims including additional loss adjustment expenses. More detailed meteorological information on the event is available via the CatIQ subscriber platform.

Caroline Floyd, Director of CatIQ, commented: “Severe convective storms have again been at the forefront of what has been a very active year for Canadian catastrophes. More than half of the year’s events involved SCS, including multiple major catastrophes affecting large population centres. The recent estimates released by our PERILS colleagues for the European severe convective events Raphaela and Cerry demonstrate the growing global impacts of this peril, and reaffirm the importance of having accurate data detailing the effects of these kinds of events.”
